  • Either back-formed from the diminutive ръку́нка (rǎkúnka) of ръка́ (rǎká, hand, arm);
  • Or cognate with dial. Russian ку́на (kúna, handful), of unclear origin. Possibly from the root of dialectal Bulgarian ку́я (kúja, to forge, to smith).
