Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *govoriti, from Proto-Indo-European *gewH- (to call, cry) with a -b⁽ʰ⁾- enlargement, perhaps connected to the synonymous *ǵʰewH-. Cognate to Polish gaworzyć, Czech hovořit, Ukrainian говорити (hovoryty), Serbo-Croatian гово̀рити, Persian گفتن (goftan, to say, to speak).
