Inherited from Old East Slavic вѣникъ (věnikŭ), from Proto-Slavic *věnikъ, from *věnъ (wreath) + *-ikъ, details of further origin unclear (possibly from Proto-Indo-European *woh₁y-nos or derived later) but ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (to twist, wind, weave).
