From Middle Mongol ᠪᠥᠰ (bös), from a Turkic language.[1] Compare Old Turkic 𐰋𐰕 (böz), Karakhanid بُوزْ (bȫz), Uyghur بۆز (böz), Turkmen biz, Ottoman Turkish بز, Turkish bez and Chuvash пир (pir). The ultimate origin is Arabic بَزّ (bazz).
