Etymology
From Proto-Turkic *bu-gün-ki; equivalent to бөгүн (bögün, “today”, predicative) + -гү (-gü, attributive suffix). Cognate with Khakas пӱӱнгі (püüngì), Yakut бүгүҥҥү (bügüññü), Southern Altai бӱгӱнги (bügüngi), Kazakh бүгінгі (bügıñı), Turkish bugünkü, etc.
