From Proto-Turkic *bu-gün; equivalent to бо (bo, “this”) + хүн (xün, “day”). Cognate with Khakas пӱӱн (püün), Shor пӱӱн, Yakut бүгүн (bügün), Western Yugur poɣïn, Southern Altai бӱгӱн (bügün), Kazakh бүгін (bügın), Turkish bugün, etc.
