From Proto-Turkic *āŋla- (“to understand”), from Proto-Turkic *āŋ (“intelligence, mind”).[1]

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (aŋla-, “to understand”);[2] Kyrgyz аңдоо (aŋdoo, “to understand”), Southern Altai оҥдоор (oŋdoor, “to understand”), Karachay-Balkar ангыларгъа (añılarğa, “to understand”), Uzbek anglamoq (“to understand”), Uyghur ئاڭلىماق (anglimaq, “to listen; to understand”), Turkish anlamak (“to understand”), Azerbaijani anlamaq (“to understand”).
