τορύνη
See also: Τορύνη
Ancient Greek
Etymology
The formation is similar to κορύνη (korúnē), σιβύνη (sibúnē) and χελύνη (khelúnē). Semantically, one could connect Old English þweran (“to stir”) and þwirel (“stick for whipping milk”). Yet formally this etymology is implausible, since it would require a zero grade *τυρ-ύνη (*tur-únē). Derivation from the root of τείρω (teírō, “to oppress, distress, weaken”) is semantically difficult. Latin trua (“ladle”) has the same meaning, but the form cannot be reconciled with that of this word. In view of the suffix -υν-, the word could be Pre-Greek.
