στόνυξ
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Assumed to be a cross of ὄνυξ (ónux, “nail”) and στόχος (stókhos, “pillar of brick”), στάχυς (stákhus, “ear of wheat”) or στόρθυγξ (stórthunx, “spike, tine”). Beekes suggests it's Pre-Greek in view of the suffix.
