μελία

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

Etymology

Likely from Proto-Indo-European *mélit.

The old comparison with Lithuanian smelùs (sand colored) starts from the grey color of the wood. Perhaps the word is Pre-Greek, in view of the various forms in "-ινος".
