Etymology

Inherited from Byzantine Greek λιγοστός (ligostós), form of ὀλιγοστός (oligostós) from the Ancient Greek ὀλιγοστός (oligostós), with omission of initial ⟨ο⟩, perceived as an article (ὁ (ho)).[1] Also see λίγος (lígos).

Usage notes

The difference of λιγοστός (ligostós) and the synonym λίγος (lígos) is stylistic. λίγος (lígos) is the common word for 'few'; λιγοστός (ligostós) is used less frequently, stressing scarceness, in a more poetic way. Compare to the Shakespearean We happy few. Synonym πενιχρός (penichrós) stresses the lack, the poor condition.
