Inherited from Byzantine Greek λευτεριά (leuteriá), form of ἐλευτεριά (eleuteriá)/ἐλευθεριά (eleutheriá),[1] from Ancient Greek ἐλευθερία (eleuthería) with [fθ] > [ft] and synizesis.[2] Doublet of ελευθερία (elefthería).
