ζιρκόνιο

Greek

Etymology

Ultimately a reborrowing: in the chemical sense, from German Zirkon (zircon mineral) via French zircon, formed in the 1780s from Arabic زَرْقُون (zarqūn, zircon, minium). Itself زَرْقُون (zarqūn) is from Middle Persian 𐭦𐭫𐭢𐭥𐭭 (zargōn), a borrowing from Ancient Greek Συρικόν (Surikón, minium, red lead, literally Syrian [stone]) perhaps transformed under the influence of Middle Persian *zarr (gold). Doublet of ζιργκόν (zirgkón).

Noun

ζιρκόνιο • (zirkónio) n (uncountable)

  1. (chemistry, metallurgy) zirconium metal, element 40
  2. (mineralogy) the mineral zircon (a zirconium nesosilicate)
