Usage notes
The Unicode Standard states that Ω (U+2126 OHM SIGN) is included in Unicode only for backward compatibility reasons. To represent ohms, Ω (U+03A9 GREEK CAPITAL LETTER OMEGA) is preferred.

Etymology
The most common uppercase form is a variant of omicron (Ο), broken up at the side (), with the edges subsequently turned outward (, , , ). The alternative uppercase form, found in some typefaces, that looks like a larger version of lowercase ω, is from a digraph of two omicrons written close together.
