From Proto-Indo-European *ḱelh₁- (warm). Cognate with Latvian silts; outside of Baltic, compare Proto-Germanic *hlēwaz (lukewarm),[1] Latin caleō (to be warm), Welsh clyd, Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćarHáts (autumn, summer; year).
