Etymology
From Ottoman Turkish شمدی (şimdi), from earlier شو امدی (şu imdi), from Old Anatolian Turkish امدی (emdi, imdi), from Proto-Turkic *em- (“now”). Cognate with Turkmen şindi (“now”), Azerbaijani indi, Southern Altai эмди (emdi), Tatar инде (inde, “now”), Tuvan ам (am, “now”).
