From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r/s-ŋ(y)a (to borrow, to lend). Cognate with Burmese ငှား (hnga:, to borrow (something that can be returned)), Tibetan རྙ (rnya), བརྙ (brnya, to borrow, to lend), Sichuan Yi (hxe, to borrow), Lisu ꓥꓪꓸ (ŋwɑ́, to lend (same article to be returned)), Tangut 𗟫 (*njir², to lend), Horpa rŋi (to borrow), Naxi ni (to borrow), Idu ɑ⁵⁵ ŋɑ⁵⁵ (to borrow (tools)), and Rawang ngá (to borrow). Compare Lhao Vo ngho:, Zaiwa ngvo, Longchuan Achang m̥ɔ³¹ and Hpon ŋà.
