Etymology
From ħmar (“ass, donkey”) + -ija, equivalent to Arabic حِمارِيّة (ḥimāriyya), which is occasionally found in the same sense. Uncertain whether inherited or independent, though the -e- (vis-à-vis the -a- in ħmar) shows that the formation goes back at least to a time when imala was still active.
