Etymology
Although sounding like a từ láy formation from đần (“retarded”), the morpheme độn (from Chinese 鈍/钝 (dùn, “dull; dimwitted”); also compare English sharp) is also found in other words such as trì độn (“retarded; mentally challenged”) or ngu độn (“moronic”).
