Cognate with Finnish ydin (“core, kernel; marrow”), Karelian yjin, Livvi üdin, Northern Sami ađa (“(bone with) marrow”) (from Proto-Samic *ëδëm), Erzya удем (uďem, “brain, intellect; marrow”), Eastern Mari вем (vem, “brain; marrow”), Udmurt виым (viym, “brain; marrow”), Komi-Zyrian вем (vem, “brain; marrow”), Northern Khanty вэԓǝм (wełǝm, “marrow; brain; core”), Northern Mansi ва̄лм (wālm, “brain; marrow”) and Hungarian velő (“brain; marrow”).
