Inherited from Old French letuaire, respelled to more closely match Late Latin ēlectuārium, from Ancient Greek ἐκλείκτον (ekleíkton, “medicine which is licked away”), from ἐκλείχω (ekleíkhō, “to lick up”), from ἐκ (ek, “out, from”) + λείχω (leíkhō, “to lick”).
