Etymology
From Danish abbor and Swedish abborre, from Old Danish and Old Swedish aghborre. Originally a compound, the first part derives from a Germanic root meaning "sting", from the Proto-Indo-European root *h₂eḱ- (“sharp”) (whence also modern Norwegian egg and English edge). The last part is akin to borre.
