Structure
Enzymatic Activity
SFTI-1 is the smallest member of the Bowman-Birk family of serine protease inhibitors. With only 14 amino acid residues, it is much smaller than any other Bowman-Birk inhibitor. It has only one active site, whereas most Bowman-Birk inhibitors have two. Despite its name SFTI-1 can inhibit a range of serine proteases, not just trypsin.
Evolution and Distribution
SFTI-1 and two other PDPs are protease inhibitors. The function of other PDPs is unknown, thought it si speculated that they may have defensive properties.
