Narcissistic injury occurs when the ego receives less than its desired need for attention, power, and reward, often leading to a hostile disposition towards others who are blamed for the perceived slights.
Narcissistic patterns are commonly understood to evolve as unresolved childhood experiences. Thus, understanding and treatment of narcissism draws significantly on psychodynamics.
