Things that are invalid for s'chach

632:1


Invalid schach makes a sukkah invalid in the middle if it is four tefachim [wide]. However, less than four is valid and one is permitted to sleep under it. On the side, it does not invalidate except if the invalid schach measures four amot. However, less than four is valid, as we consider it a curved wall. In other words, we see it as if the wall is bent and we treat the invalid schach as part of the wall. This is a law given to Moses at Sinai. Therefore, if a house was breached in the middle, schach was placed at the breach, and the ceiling remaining surrounding the valid schach was less than four amot, it is kosher. However, we do not sleep underneath when it is more than four tefachim [wide]. This applies to a large sukkah that has 7x7 tefachim beyond the area with invalid s'chach. However, in a small sukkah that is only 7x7, three tefachim renders it invalid whether in the middle or on the side. Less than three is valid, and we may sleep underneath it, and it joins together to complete the minimum dimensions of the sukkah.

Three tefachim of open space, whether in a large or small [sukkah], is invalid whether in the middle or on the side. Less than three is valid and joins together [with the covered areas] to complete the sukkah. We do not sleep underneath it. Rem"a: This is specifically if it goes along the entire length of the sukkah (Rabbeinu Yerucham) or if it is big enough to insert the head and the majority [of the body]. But otherwise, it is permitted, as there is no sukkah that does not have holes (R"an). This idea that four of invalid schach or three of open space invalidates a sukkah is specifically when the sukkah is divided into two, and there does not remain a valid measure for a kosher sukkah with walls in one side. Less than four [tefachim] of invalid schach next to less than three of air do not join together to render the sukkah invalid. Therefore, if there are three [tefachim] of air in one place, even if the if we reduce it with invalid schach, it is valid. This is true for a big sukkah. However, in a small sukkah that only measures 7x7, if there are three tefachim between them, they join together to invalidate the sukkah.

סעיף ג

סכך פסול פחות מד' ואויר אצלו פחות משלשה אין מצטרפים לפסול הלכך אם אויר שלשה במקום א' אפי' מיעטו בסכך פסול כשר והני מילי בסוכה גדולה אבל בקטנה שאין בה אלא ז' על ז' אם יש בין שניהם שלשה טפחים מצטרפים לפסול:

If there are two tefachim of invalid s'chach and two more tefachim of invalid schach and open space less than three between them, it is questionable whether the two invalid parts join together to invalidate the sukkah.

סעיף ד

אם יש סכך פסול ב' טפחים ועוד סכך פסול ב"ט ואויר פחות משלשה מפסיק ביניהם יש להסתפק אם שני הפסולים מצטרפים לפסול הסוכה:
