Laws Relating to a Person Who Has Only One Tefillin

דין מי שאין לו אלא תפלה אחת

Paragraph 1 — If he only has one tefillin, he should don the one he has and bless upon it, for each tefillin individually is its own mitzvah. And the same law applies if he has two of them, and there is any unforeseen circumstance where he is only able to don one, he should wrap the one that he is able.

סעיף א —

אם אין לו אלא תפלה אחת מניח אותה שיש לו ומברך עליה שכל אחת מצוה בפני עצמה והוא הדין אם יש לו שתיהם ויש לו שום אונס שאינו יכול להניח אלא אחת מניח אותה שיכול


Paragraph 2 — If he is able to wrap the head tefillin only, he should upon it recite the blessing "...on the mitzvah of tefillin" only.

Rem"a: And for us that have the custom to say two blessings over tefillin each day, one should bless on the head-tefillin [if he only has that] by itself two blessings, and if he dons the hand tefillin only, he blesses "...to place" only (Tur).
