Ryōgoku Bridge by Hiroshige, c. 1856-1858

Ryōgoku Bridge (両国橋, Ryōgoku-bashi, literally, "two provinces" bridge) connected Musashi Province and Shimōsa Province in the Edo period of Japan. The bridge crossed the Sumida River in the area of modern Tokyo.[1]

History

1659 (Manji 2): Building began on the Ryōgoku Bridge.[2]
September 1, 1923 (Taishō 12, 1st day of the 9th month): The bridge was damaged during the Great Kantō earthquake.[3]
1932 (Shōwa 7): Bridge re-building completed.[3]
