Gina Raimondo

Gina Marie Raimondo (born May 17, 1971) is an American politician, businesswoman, and venture capitalist. She is a member of the Democratic Party. In 2021, she became the United States Secretary of Commerce under the Joe Biden administration.

In 2015, Raimondo became the 75th Governor of the State of Rhode Island. She is the first woman to be Governor of Rhode Island.[1] She removed "Providence Plantations" from the name of the state in 2020. She removed it because plantations are related to slavery.[2] Before that, she was the General Treasurer for the State of Rhode Island from 2011 through 2015.

On January 7, 2021, President-elect Joe Biden nominated Raimondo to serve as the United States Secretary of Commerce in his cabinet.[3] Her nomination was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 2, 2021 with a 84-15 vote.[4]
