Dillingham was once known as the Pacific salmon capital of the world. Commercial fishing is an important part of the local economy.
Dillingham is the headquarters for nearby Togiak National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is home to walruses, seals, terrestrial mammals, migratory birds and fish. It includes one of the largest wild herring fisheries in the world.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Bristol Bay Campus (BBC) is in Dillingham.
