In April 2019, Pugh announced she was taking a leave of absence to recover from pneumonia. The announcement came at the same time when a scandal over a "self-dealing" book-sales arrangement of Pugh's books in exchange for contracts with the city were made public.[2] On May 2, 2019, Pugh resigned as Mayor of Baltimore amid the book scandal.[3]
On February 27, 2020, Pugh was sentenced to 3 years in prison to be followed by 3 years of probation.[4]
