History

When the Tarn-et-Garonne department was created in 1808, Castelsarrasin was one of the original arrondissements of the department.[2]

Geography

It is the westernmost of the arrondissements of the department, with an area of 1,601.5 km2 (618 sq mi),[3] the smallest in area of the department. It has 76,822 inhabitants and a population density of 48.0 inhabitants/km².[4]

The arrondissement is bordered to the north by the Lot (Occitanie) department, to the east by the arrondissement of Montauban, to the south by the Haute-Garonne (Occitanie) department, to the southwest by the Gers (Occitanie) department and to the northwest by the Lot-et-Garonne (Nouvelle-Aquitaine) department.

Composition

Cantons

After the reorganisation of the cantons in France,[5] cantons are not subdivisions of the arrondissements so they could have communes that belong to different arrondissements. That is the case of the Beaumont-de-Lomagne, Castelsarrasin, Montech and the Pays de Serres Sud-Quercy cantons where some communes are in the arrondissement of Castelsarrasin and others in the arrondissement of Montauban. The following table shows the distribution of the "communes" in the cantons and arrondissements:
