Arrondissement of Bordeaux

The arrondissement of Bordeaux is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Gironde département in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Its capital, and préfecture of the department, is the city of Bordeaux.

History

When the arrondissements of Gironde were created in 1800, Bordeaux was one of them in the Gironde department.[2]

Geography

The arrondissement of Bordeaux is in the centre of the Gironde department and it has an area of 1,521.8 km2 (588 sq mi),[3] and a population of 921,668 inhabitants; its population density is of 605.6 inhabitants/km².[4]

The arrondissement of Bordeaux is surrounded by other arrondissements of the department. It is bordered to the north by the arrondissement Blaye, to the northeast by the arrondissement Libourne, to the southeast by the arrondissement Langon, to the southwest by the arrondissement Arcachon and to the northwest by the arrondissement Lesparre-Médoc.

After the reorganisation of the cantons in France,[5] cantons are not subdivisions of the arrondissements so they could have communes that belong to different arrondissements.
