Vasiliy Golovnin (Russian: «Василий Головнин»; IMO 8723426) is a Russian Project 10620 icebreaking cargo ship built in 1988 in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic,[1][2][3] and named after the Russian navigator, vice admiral Vasily Golovnin (1776—1831). The vessel is operated by Russia's Far East Shipping Company (FESCO).[4]

The Vasiliy Golovnin has regularly been chartered for entire seasons, including by Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina.[5][6]

On April 29, 2019, TASS reported that 2 crew members died from methanol poisoning.[3][4]

Many made a beeline for the post office where Post Mistress Camilla "stamped until I dropped". About 20 Davis folks also got a trip out to the Xue Long and a tour and meal (the ship is a younger sister ship to the Vasiliy Golovnin).

At the time of the incident, the Golovnin was under way back to South Africa after a three-month charter to deliver cargo and fuel to the Indian Antarctic research stations Bharati and Maitri. She departed Cape Town with 1,000 tons of cargo and a new delegation of Indian scientists on January 26; TASS reported that the resupply mission was challenging, with poor weather and ice conditions, and Golovnin had difficulty getting free of the ice pack on her return voyage.
