Varman or its variants, Varma, Verma, Varman, Burman or Barman, are surnames that are used in India and southeast Asia.[1]
Etymology
According to Radhakanta Deb, the surname is derived from the Sanskrit word for "shield, defensive armour".[2]
According to S. Ramachandran, the Tamil version of the name is a corrupt version of the Tamil word Tamil: பெருமகன், romanized: Perumakaṉ, lit. 'Great son'.[3]
It goes as following – Perumagan (பெருமகன்) -> Perumaan (பெருமான்) -> Peruman (பெருமன்) -> Paruman (பருமன்) -> Varuman (வருமன்) -> Varman (வர்மன்).
