- 1869 – The first westbound train to travel the entire route of the First Transcontinental Railroad in North America (pictured) arrives in San Francisco, California.[1]
- 1918 – The Canadian Northern Railway is nationalized, later to become part of Canadian National Railway.
- 1943 – A hot box on Pennsylvania Railroad's Congressional passenger train causes a derailment at Frankford Junction, Pennsylvania, killing 79 people.[1]
- 2005 – Indonesian transport officials at a meeting in Bandar Lampung announce plans to build a trans-Sumatran railway to connect Banda Aceh to Bakauheni, a distance of 2,151 km (1,337 miles).[2]
