19th century
- 1865 – The Brockville and Ottawa Railway begins operations between Arnprior and Sand Point, Ontario, a distance of about 6 miles (10 km).[1]
- 1874 – A franchise for the extension of the Spring and Sixth Street Railroad to the Southern Pacific Railroad's Old River Station, in Los Angeles, California, is approved.[2]
- 1891 – New York Central stages the record breaking run of the Empire State Express between New York City and Buffalo, New York; the train makes the 436 mile (702 km) journey in just 7 hours 6 minutes, an average speed of nearly 65 mph (105 km/h).[3]
20th century
- 1915 – The funeral train for William Cornelius Van Horne departs Windsor Station in Montreal at 11:00 AM bound for Joliet, Illinois; the train is pulled by CP 4-6-2 number 2213.[4]
- 1967 – Tōyōchō Station, in Kōtō, Tokyo Prefecture, Japan, opens.
- 1974 – Amtrak discontinues its Expo '74 passenger train service connecting Seattle and Spokane for Expo '74.
- 1996 – The York-Durham Heritage Railway begins operations on CN's former branch between Uxbridge and Stouffville, Ontario.[4]
