- 1859 – At a meeting of the Drammen chairmanship in Norway, construction of a railway line to connect Drammen and Randsfjorden, now known as the Randsfjorden Line, is selected over the option for a channel.[1]
- 1892 – Western Maryland Railroad's line from Hagerstown, Maryland, over the C&O Canal and the Potomac River to Cherry Run, West Virginia, opens.[2]

- 1978 – The longest tunnel in New Zealand, through the Kaimai Ranges, opens to traffic.
