- 1848 – The Scottish Midland Junction Railway opens.[1]
- 1873 – The Ross and Monmouth Railway's line (pictured) from Monmouth, Wales, to Ross on Wye, England, opens.
- 1883 – The first electric railway in Britain opens near Brighton.
- 1894 – The Denver, Leadville and Gunnison Railway in Colorado, which purchased the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad five years earlier, enters receivership.
