- 1839 – The Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway in England opens.
- 1854 – The first section of what is now Belgian railway line 161 opens connecting Brussels-Luxembourg and La Hulpe stations.[1]
- 1872 – The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, building westward from Newton, Kansas, reaches Larned.
- 1888 – Santa Fe Railroad subsidiary companies complete construction of the final link in what has come to be known as the Surf Line connecting Los Angeles and San Diego.[2]
