- 1842 – The French government enacts the Loi relative à l'établissement des grandes lignes de chemins de fer which establishes the plan for French railroads' placement in a star pattern centered around Paris.
- 1857 – The Chemin de Fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée (PLM) is formed from the amalgamation of the Chemin de fer de Lyon à la Méditerranée (LM) and the Chemin de fer de Paris à Lyon (PL) companies.
20th century
- 1901 – The Ōu South Line in Japan opens between Yonezawa and Yamagata.
- 1905 – New Haven Railroad acquires control of Springfield Street Railway.[1]
- 2000 – CSX Transportation chairman and CEO John W. Snow succeeds Ronald J. Conway as president of the railroad.[2]
21st century
- 2003 – M>Train withdraws fleet of Siemens Mo-Mo trains due to braking and traction issues.
