Pan-Iranian colors include the main colors of red, white, green, and sometimes yellow or gold. They are the colors used on the flags of most Iranian states and nations. Their use symbolizes the shared origins of Iranian peoples.[1][2][3]

History

Pan-Iranian colors are rooted in antiquity. According to the Avesta, the full free population of ancient Iranian society was divided into three classes, each of which was associated with a certain color:[4]

  • Military nobility (Avestan: raθaē-štar) – red color, a symbol of military valor and blood and self-sacrifice in the name of high ideals, so it is considered the most revered and noble;
  • Mobads (āθravan) – white color, symbolizes spirituality, moral purity, cleanliness, and holiness;
  • Pastoralist-farmer community (vāstrya fšuyant) – green, symbolizes nature, youth, and prosperity.[5]

To this day in the Pamiri community, red symbolizes happiness, well-being and joy, white - purity and clarity, green - youth and prosperity.[6]

The tradition of using red, white and green colors was established in the Achaemenid Empire and was continued ever since.[7]
