Newbury Hotel (formerly Broder's Hotel) is a hotel in Mullingar, Westmeath, Ireland.

History

Broder's Hotel

Broder's Hotel was opened in 1920 by James and Anna Broder (née Bracken).[2] James Broder, the proprietor of the hotel, died on 31 August 1961, aged 67.[3][4] Following his death, the hotel was owned and managed by Mr. and Mrs. James McLoughlin, who was once the manager of the Ormond Hotel in Dublin. Anna Broder died on 25 December 1974, aged 79.[5] Broder's Hotel, along with the Four Swans Lounge, was put up for auction on 10 November 1976.[6] The hotel then sold for £64,000 (equivalent to £490,056 in 2021) to Joseph Quinn, a hotelier from Oldcastle who was, in 1976, managing a licensed business near Coventry.[7]

Newbury Hotel

The hotel officially opened as Newbury Hotel on 7 December 1990 by Josephine Hughes from Navan and her husband Seán from Slanemore.[8] At the time of opening, the hotel had 10 en suite bedrooms, two function rooms and a restaurant.[9] In March 1991, there was a piano bar held on Thursday nights.[10] The company associated with the hotel is 'Gopack Limited', registered on 19 October 1987.[11]

In 1998, the hotel was purchased by Milford, Donegal native Garvan McGinley, the husband of Seán's sister Mairead.[12] Seán and Josephine then moved to construct the four-star Mullingar Park Hotel.[13]

In 2003, McGinley announced that the Newbury had been given planning permission for an 18 bedroom extension to be constructed following the partial demolition of the rear of numbers 55 and 57 Dominick Street - formerly a pub and betting shop.[14]
