Madeleine Kate Steere (born 15 September 1996), also known as Maddy Steere,[1] is an Australian professional water polo centre back. She plays for İzmir BB GSK in Turkey. She represented Australia at youth and junior level before she became part of the Australia national team.

She played in diverse teams in her country, and in the college team during her university years in the United States.

Early years

Steere started her sports career in her hometown at Essendon Water Polo Club in 2003, where she was a member until 2016. Two years between 2011–2012, she played for Victorian Tigers Water Polo Club. She then transferred to Victorian Seals, where she played between 2013–2016 four years long in the Australian National Water Polo League (ANWPL).[2] She was part of the team, which won the silver medal at the Women's Water Polo Canada Cup 2013 held in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.[2][3] In 2014, she was named "Water Polo Australia Junior Athlete of the Year".[2][4]

During the 2014 FINA Youth Water Polo World Championships in Spain, she was approached by the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, and was invited to the United States to study at the University of Michigan, and play in the college water polo team.[5] In 2017, she accepted this offer. She played two years in the NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship. In 2018, she was selected to the "All-American team".[4] In 2019, she went back home,[4] returned, however, in 2022 to the university in Michigan, and played further for the college team.[2]

Club career

Steere is 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in) tall and plays right-handed in the centre back position.[4]

After returning home from the United States in 2019, she joined Australian Catholic University Cronulla Sharks Water Polo Club to play in the ANWPL. She was a member of the Griffith University Queensland Thunder, which won the bronze medal at the ANWPL in 2023.[4]

In September 2023, she moved to Turkey, and signed a deal with İzmir BB GSK.[6] She enjoyed her team's champions title at the 2023–24 LEN Women's Challenger Cup in Zagreb, Croatia.[7][8]

International career

Australia girls' U-16

As a Victorian Institute of Sport athlete, she was admitted to the "Aussie Stingers" (Australia women's national youth water polo team). In 2012, she took part at the Pan Pacific Games in Melbourne as the captain of the Australia national U-16 team, which won the gold medal.[4] She played in 2014 at the FINA Youth Water Polo World Championships in Madrid, Spain.[9]

Australia women's U-18

In 2015, she participated at the FINA World Women's Junior Water Polo Championships in Volos Greece captaining the Australia U-18 team.[2] She was part of the gold medal-winning national team at the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea.[9]

Australia women's

Still a university student in the United States, Steere was named to the Australia national team roster.[10] She played at the World Aquatics Championships in 2017 in Budapest, Hungary (8th place), and 2019 in Gwangju, South Korea (bronze medal).[9]

She was part of the national team at the Super Final of the FINA Water Polo World League in 2017 in Shanghai, China (7th place), [10] 2018 in Kunshan, China (7th place) and 2019 in Budapest, Hungary (5th place).[9]

She capped in 67 international matches.[4]

Personal life

Madeleine Kate Steere was born to Darren and Catherine Steere in Pascoe Vale, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on 15 September 1996. She has a sister, Alexandra.[2]

She was educated in St Catherine's School for girls in the Melburne's suburb Toorak.[10] After graduating in 2014, she attended University of Melbourne in 2015.[2] In 2017, she went to the United States, and entered University of Michigan, where she first spent two years. In 2019, she went back home.[4] In 2022, she returned to her university in Michigan, where she majored in Biomolecular science.[2] She is a Pharmaceutical mediciner from profession.[1]
