This is a list of the highest elevation communities in the United States. This list includes both incorporated municipalities and census-designated places. This list includes 82 towns in Colorado, eight towns in New Mexico, five towns in Wyoming, four towns in Utah, two towns in Arizona, and one town in California. Ten of these towns are located in Boulder County, Colorado and another ten towns are located in Clear Creek County, Colorado.

A second list includes the highest elevation towns in the United States east of the Mississippi River.

In addition to the settlements listed below, there are various communities containing elevations above 3,000 feet that are not included in this list, due to their average elevation or the main part of the community being lower than 3,000 feet, such as Jefferson, North Carolina or Meadows of Dan, Virginia. The color purple denotes that a community is unincorporated, while the color yellow denotes that it is a census-designated place. Uncolored cells denote that a community is incorporated.

  11. Winter Park, Colorado has the highest elevation within the municipal boundaries of any town in the United States at 12,060 feet (3,676 m).
  12. The Mountain City, Kansas Territory post office (now Central City, Colorado) was the highest elevation U.S. post office when it opened on January 17, 1860.[4]
