The Capture of Mascara in 1831 was a conflict that happend during the establishment of the Abdelkader state following the collapse of the Regency of Algiers.

Battle

Having been designated as the leader of the uprising, Mahieddine, Abdelkader's father, is determined to fight against the remaining Algerian garrisons. With fervor, Abdelkader and his father Mahieddine attack Mascara. Young Abdelkader distinguishes himself in battle, appearing to be "safe from bullets and cannonballs, with horses killed beneath him."[1] He receives assistance from the Sahrawi Makhzen tribes, who besiege the city, along with the Bordjia from the Mascara region. The city falls into plunder, and the entire garrison is massacred.[2] Possibly after its surrender. The massacre of The Garisson compels the latter to resist to the end within the last garrisons behind their walls.[3]

Aftermath

Encouraged by this expedition, Abdelkader then heads towards Oran to dislodge the French forces.[1] The following year, Abdelkader will be recognized as a sultan and receive the allegiance or "moubayaa" of the allied tribes in the Grand Mosque of Mascara.[4]
