From Middle High German zīestac, zīstac, from Old High German zīostag, from Proto-West Germanic *Tīwas dag (“Tuesday”, literally “day of Tiw”), a calque of Latin dīes Martis (literally “day of Mars”).
Cognate with German Ziestag, West Frisian tiisdei, English Tuesday, Faroese týsdagur, Swedish tisdag.
