zimorodek
Polish
Etymology
From zima (“winter”) + -o- + rodzić (“to give birth”) + -ek, thus literally "born in winter". Corrupted from earlier ziemiorodek, from ziemia (“soil, ground”) + rodzić (“to give birth”), thus literally "giving birth in the soil". This accurately describes the nesting habits of the bird, which makes nests in burrows dug in steep riverside cliffs.

Audio (file) - Rhymes: -ɔdɛk
