yozmaq

Azerbaijani

Other scripts
Cyrillic јозмаг
Abjad یوزماق

Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *yor- (to interpret). Cognate with Turkish yormak (interpret), Turkmen ýormak (to foretell, interpret), Kyrgyz жоруу (joruu, to interpret), Kazakh жору (joru, to interpret).

The development of the coda-final /z/ remains unclear.[1] Possibilities include an expected development of the Proto-Turkic /*ŕ/, which was unexpectedly turned into /r/ instead of /z/ in all other cognates (as in reflexes of *köŕ- (to see)); or development of the variant *yod-, as reflected in dialectal Turkish yoymak, Uzbek yoʻymoq and joʻymoq.
