Etymology
From Old Norse ósk, from Proto-Germanic *wunskō, from Proto-Indo-European *wenh₁- (“to wish, love”). The 'n' was re-added under the influence of Middle Low German (compare German Low German wönschen (“wish”), Plautdietsch Wensch (“wish”)).
