From Old Irish in·saigim, from in- + saigid (“go towards, seek, attain”), from Proto-Indo-European *séh₂gyeti (“to seek out, to track”). Cognate with Irish ionsaigh (“advance upon, attack, reach, attain”) and Scottish Gaelic ionnsaich (“learn, instruct, educate”).
